無限の謎に取り組んだ数学者たちが話題にされている本。
説明が噛み砕かれていて面白かった。
主な人物はゲオルク・カントールという人で、独力で集合論を作り上げたらしい。
今日では数学全体の基礎となっているとか。
そして実無限に対峙して連続体仮説を解こうとしたのだが、精神に変調をきたし鬱になってしまった。
われわれの数学体系の内部では証明できない、解けない問題を解こうとしていたのだという。(コーエンが証明)
一般的な話として長い年月をかけても問題が解けないというのは辛そうだと思ったが、同じく従事したゲーデルという人も鬱になったらしく、危険な問題だな…
著者によると何かしらこの世ならぬところがあり、長期間それだけを考え詰めることをできなくさせるようだ。
それにしても卓越した数学者たちがいたのだな。
そういえばこの問題はBooks I read a long time agoにも載っていた気がする。
あとは権力に逆らってしまったガリレオとボルツァーノの話は興味を持った。
ヒルベルトの無限ホテルのたとえ話も載っていた。
また代数学は方程式とその解を研究する分野で離散的なものを対象とする。
一方解析学は連続的なものを対象とする。
その他は円積問題と呼ばれるものの記述が可笑しかった。
この問題は、やはり同じころに提起された角の三等分問題や、立方体の倍積問題とともに三大作図不能問題と呼ばれ、ギリシャの数学とバビロニアやエジプトのそれとのあいだに一線を画するものである。In fact、こんな抽象的な問題を解いたところで実地の技術には全く役立たないだろうが、それをあえてやろうとするのがギリシャ数学のギリシャ数学たるところなのだ。

数学というのも難しそうだが楽しそうだな。
それにしても紀元前の人物の考えが現代に伝わって僕らが知る事が出来るなんてすごい。
