• A result of making a toaster from scratch トーマス・トウェイツ (Written by) / 村井 理子 (Translation) Shinchosha (Publishing House) / 新潮文庫 2015年9月27日 (Release date) Bunko (Format) As a graduate school graduation work by the author who is a designer、He said he tried to make a toaster from scratch.。 put together the process、A study of human society? a book that said。 It was easy to see because there was a photograph of the color (some black and white) on it.。 なぜトースターを選んだのかは著者なりの2つの理由があるみたいだが、イギリスではトースターはそれほど身近で必要不可欠なものなのかな？ 著者はトースターを分解してみて、最小限、鉄、マイカ、プラスチック、銅、ニッケルの5つが必要と考える。 そしてそれらの原料を探すのだが、自分ルールを破っているところが僕は気にかかった。 鉄を溶錬するのに電子レンジを使ったり、プラスチックは既にあるものを溶かして再利用したりしている。 銅を抽出するのには電気分解したり、ニッケルについては硬貨を溶かしたのだ。 それだけ原料をゲットするのは大変だということなのだろうけど。 And、筆者は本書で次のように述べている。 個人の知識や能力と、専門家が作る製品の複雑さとの間にあるギャップは広がるばかりだ。僕たちが、身のまわりのものを自分たち自身の手で作ることができなくなってから、長い年月がたつ。少なくともそう思える。 （p.8） 僕もそうだなと思った。 僕たちはいろんな製品、パソコンや車などを日頃便利に使っているが、普通の人がゼロから材料を探してそれらを作れるかといったら、作れないだろう。 CPUとかメモリとかHDDを原料から作るなんて専門の工場でないと無理だと思う。 技術の発達で、専門家しか複雑な製品の中身を理解できなくなっているのかもしれない。 金属とかプラスチックとか、材料についても専門の企業が製造を行って供給してるんだろうし。 科学技術の進歩はいいことだけど、知識が膨大になって細分化されちゃってるのかな。 僕たちは自分の学んだことや仕事にしていることなど、限られた一部のことしか知らないんだなと感じた。 Well、その一部の知識をしっかりおさめた専門家になるのも大変なことだろうけどな。 筆者は結局9ヶ月かけて3060キロを移動し、約15万円（2012年のレートで）をかけてトースターを作った。 But、イギリスでは約500円でトースターが買えるという。 現代社会はすごいものだな。 はたして著者が作ったトースターが実際に動作したのかどうかは最後の章に書かれている。 世の中にはおもしろいことを考える人もいるものだと僕は思った。 筆者ががんばったということは伝わってきたな。

• The Life of Kappa and Ora-Akuma   芥川 龍之介 (Written by) Shinchosha (Publishing House) / 新潮文庫 1968年12月15日 (Release date) Bunko (Format) 本巻には表題の短編「河童」が収められている。 「河童」は次のように始まる。 これは或精神病院の患者、第二十三号が誰にでもしゃべる話である。 （p.66） ある男が河童の国へ行ってきたというのだ。 But、その男は今は正気を疑われて精神病院に入院している。 僕は本当に河童の国があったのかもと思って読んでいたが、終盤になると、河童の友達が持って来てくれたという黒百合の花束が存在しなかったり、電話帳を河童の国で出版された詩集だと言ったりと、状況が怪しくなってくる。 やっぱり河童の国なんてものはなく、この男は精神を病んでいたのだろう。 ファンタジーを現実と錯覚させるかのような不思議な魅力のある小説だった。 However,、このような小説を書くなんて著者の芥川龍之介も病んでいたんだなぁ。 昔は今みたいにいい薬もなかっただろうし、病気になると大変だっただろう。 著者は1927年に亡くなったとのことで、約90年前か。 現代社会では何かと精神が疲れることが多いが、昔から同じようなことはあったんだなと感じた。
